Tips for Improving Your English Language Writing Skills

In the past two previous posts, we reviewed tips and suggestions on how to improve your listening and reading skills in English, so that you’re properly prepared to take your IELTS examination. In this segment, we’ll discuss tips for improving your English writing skills, which is another key area on the IELTS exam.

Writing clear and complete sentences in English requires following a set of specific rules and guidelines. You can’t be expected to compose outstanding sentences and entire papers on various topics if you don’t know the rules and guidelines. So, the first step to improving your English writing skills is to learn the rules and guidelines!

Learning the Rules of English Writing

The best place to learn the proper rules is with English writing course books. You can often find these at book stores. These “workbooks” contain a variety of topics and assignments for you to complete. It’s important to start with the beginner level and then as you improve your skills, progress to intermediate and advanced levels.

Learn New Words Daily

Make it a point to learn new words, their spellings, and definitions every day. You could select two or three words out of an English dictionary you don’t know. There are some great apps for your phone including “Word of the Day”, it’s a free download. After reviewing the spelling and meanings, write a sentence or two using the new words. You could also include the new words you learned over the past few days for further reinforcement.

Read Something Daily

Reading English is an essential part of developing your writing skills, too. The more you read, the more you start to identify sentence structure, the proper placement of nouns and verbs, and correct grammar.

Write Daily

Make a habit of sitting down every day and spend about 20 to 30 minutes writing. You can write about anything or any topic which interests you. The objective of this task is to write between four and six well-written sentences. After writing out your sentences, read them out loud and ask yourself if this sounds right or makes sense. If not, edit your sentences until they sound correct.

Have an English Speaking Friend Read Your Written Work

Even though your writing might sound accurate and correct, it’s in your best interest to have an English speaking friend review the material, too. They might notice a spelling error, improper placement of a comma, or some other grammar error you overlooked.

Enroll in an ESL Writing Class

If you are finding it difficult to improve your writing skills on your own, there are ESL (English as a Second Language) writing classes you can enroll in and complete. You might find a classroom setting is exactly what you need to keep you encouraged.

Instructions before the IELTS written and speaking test were very clear and the people were nice and helpful. I found the written test pretty good. It was not too difficult, nor too simple. The results came quickly and I was accepted in the program and I am currently in the middle of my first year exams.
